Dropping a Course
Students can drop a class in myZou until the last day to drop a course without a grade. Check the posted deadlines for classes that meet for the full semester or term.
Before dropping or withdrawing from a class, check the Cashier’s adjustment schedule to understand how changes will impact your tuition and fee assessment. Also, please consult your financial aid advisor if you receive financial aid of any type. Students should talk with their academic advisor on the impact of dropping or withdrawing from a class on your progress toward degree.
- International students should check with the International Center if you cannot drop a class.
- Athletes should check with the Athletics department if you cannot drop a class.
- Dropping or withdrawing from a class in myZou must occur prior to the drop or withdraw deadlines listed on the Academic Calendar.
- Dropping or withdrawing from a self-paced course must occur prior to the drop or withdraw deadlines for the self-paced course and prior to the completion of the final lesson and/or exam in the self-paced course.
- Dropping a current term self-paced course: students can drop them through myZou prior to the deadline.
- Dropping a past term self-paced course: students must fill out the Assistance Changing Class Schedule form in Cherwell.
- Dropping a co-requisite class: students will need to attach permission from the instructor of the course and fill out the Assistance Changing Class Schedule form in Cherwell.
Withdrawing from Term/University (dropping all classes)
Dropping all classes or dropping the last class in which you are enrolled, is considered a withdrawal from the university. Submission of the Term Withdrawal form is required. Finals are not included as part of the term for this purpose.
Students may not withdraw from their last course via myZou. They should consult with the academic advising unit to which they are assigned, prior to completing the Term Withdrawal form.
Course withdrawals are prohibited after the withdrawal deadline. You can find specific deadlines on the Academic Calendar page.
Students completing a Term Withdrawal and who will not be returning the next semester, should use the following checklist to ensure they have taken all recommended steps when leaving the University.
- Refer to the Cashiers Office current Fee Reassessment Schedule page for information outlining tuition refund schedules.
- Contact Financial Aid to discuss financial impacts pertaining to scholarships, loans, etc., that you may encounter as a result of your withdrawal.
- If you are living in university housing, contact Residential Life to terminate your housing contract. If you have a dining plan, contact Dining Services.
- Notify your academic advisor and instructors.
- If you have purchased a parking permit, contact Parking & Transportation to cancel your permit.
- Return materials to the library.
- Contact the Bookstore regarding textbook rentals.
- International students should contact the International Student and Scholar Services Center regarding impacts on visa status.
- Athletes should contact their Athletic Department Academic Coordinator.
- Students using Veterans Benefits should contact the MU Veterans Center .
- If you receive services from the Disability Center, you should notify them of your intent to withdraw.
The term withdrawal form should not be used if you are completing your current semester classes but taking some time off before returning the next semester. There is no action required if you take a semester off. However, please note you will be required to reapply after one semester of non-enrollment. Information for undergraduate students who need to reapply, can be found on the Mizzou Admissions page. Graduate or professional students should check with their respective programs.
The following actions are NOT considered official notification of withdrawal:
- Failure to attend class.
- Giving notice to an instructor
- Verbal notice to any University office
Note: Students who are entering Mizzou for their first term and decide to cancel their application prior to their term start date, should use this link to cancel their application.
Students who need to temporarily discontinue their studies at Mizzou due to a serious life event, financial, military, or other extenuating circumstances, may be eligible to apply for a Leave of Absence. Returning to the University
Undergraduate students who wish to return to the University following an absence of one semester or more, should review information available here on the Office of Admissions’ website.

Students enrolled in a professional program should contact their respective program for readmission information.
Grades
Effective summer 2021, faculty will assign a grade of W (withdrew) for students who withdraw from a course.
No grades will be assigned to a student who officially withdraws from a course or the university before the last day to drop a course without a grade for the fall or spring semester, or the equivalent period of time for other sessions.
