Am I Already a Resident?

As explained on the main residency page, there are several different circumstances under which you might already be considered a resident of Missouri, even if you didn’t grow up here. For example: if you graduated from high school in Missouri and have a Missouri address, then you’re already a resident. But there are several other ways that you may have already become a Missouri resident, which we’ve outlined below.

If any of these circumstances apply to you, you’ll need to submit documents to the Residency Department to confirm your status as a Missouri Resident.

Instructions for Submitting Documents

These documents may be scanned and emailed to the Residency Department at residency@missouri.edu. Please completely cover up all Social Security Numbers before you send the documents.

Once the semester is over, you can’t change your residency status for the preceding semester. The deadlines for submitting residency documentation for the current semester are:

  • September 15 for Fall semester
  • Feburary 15 for Spring semester
  • June 15 for Summer semester

Click the situation that applies to you on the list below to jump to that section (or just scroll down the page) to find the list of documents you’ll need to submit to confirm your residency.

Family moved to Missouri—Parents live and work in the state

If a family moves to Missouri for a parent to accept a full time, benefit eligible job, the 12-month residency waiting period is waived as long as the family’s move is completed and their documents are submitted to our office by the deadline (listed in the submission instructions at the top of this page).

These documents will provide support that Missouri is now your family’s permanent home and your primary and only residence, and that the family no longer works or resides in another state.

Please submit copies of the following documents to the Residency Department along with your (the student’s) name and MU student ID number:

  • Warranty Deed or lease for your family’s home in Missouri
  • Sales contract for the home being sold in another state
  • Both parents’ Missouri Driver’s Licenses
  • Both parents’ Missouri Voter’s Registration Cards
  • Letter of Verification of one parent’s employment in Missouri. This letter must state that the job is full-time and the employee is receiving company benefits. The letter should be on company letterhead and should include the parent’s job title, the name and address of the company they are working for, and be signed by the Human Resources Department or the company’s fiscal officer. If your family moves to Missouri to live, but a parent is working in another state, you must wait 12 months to apply for Missouri residency.
  • Missouri Vehicle Registration (NOT the vehicle title)
  • Page 1 and 2 of your parent’s Federal Income Tax Form 1040 for the current year showing that you (the student) were claimed as a dependent
  • Page 1 and 2 of the Missouri 1040 for the current year if taxes were filed in Missouri
