Final exam policies and schedule
Fall 2008 exam schedule
Monday, Dec. 15–Friday, Dec. 19
Finals schedule
Each class is to meet in the scheduled room at the scheduled period for the examination or other instructional activity. No one is authorized to change this schedule in any way without permission from the Office of the University Registrar, upon recommendation of the appropriate department chairman and divisional dean, in accordance with the Faculty Handbook.
Non-standard class meeting times
- When a class period crosses over two possible finals times, the Office of the University Registrar will assign the final using the earlier beginning time. Example: For sections that meet TR 9:00–10:50 a.m., the final would be scheduled using the TR 9:00–9:50 a.m. day and time.
- For sections meeting MW, the Office of the University Registrar will assign the final as if the section meets MWF. Examples: For class sections meeting MW 9:30–10:45 a.m. or MW 9:30–10:30 a.m., the final would be scheduled using the MWF 9:00–9:50 a.m. day and time.
Conflicting final examinations
- When a regular final conflicts with a group final, the group final instructor must schedule the make-up examination.
- Conflicting group finals should be rare, but when they occur, the final with the asterisk must give the make-up examination that term.
- When two regularly scheduled finals conflict, the final with the asterisk must give the make-up examination that term.
More than two finals in a calendar day
In the event a student is scheduled to take more than two final examinations on the same day, the student may:
- Take all final examinations as they are scheduled; or
- Consult with the instructors giving the final examinations to determine if any make-up examination(s) is or can be scheduled, preferably during one of the make-up examination times available in the schedule.
In the event neither of these options work for the student, the instructor in the lower numbered course will be responsible for making up an examination to be given on an alternate day, preferably in one of the make-up slots.
Room assignments
Rooms for examinations are the same as those used for recitation or common meeting time during the semester, except in the case of group (multi-sections of a course) final examinations.
The Office of the University Registrar will assign rooms for group final examinations. Departments will be notified as soon as practical. If the schedule creates a classroom conflict, the Office of the University Registrar will rotate the preference for the room space and find alternate space for the classes that are to be relocated.
Requests for group (multi-section) final examinations
Requests must meet the following conditions:
- Courses must have total enrollment of 100 or more;
- Sections must not have a common meeting time;
- All sections must be willing to participate in the requested common examination time; and
- Courses offering a group final must offer a make-up final for students who may have conflicts with regularly scheduled section finals.
Times and dates for group final examinations will be determined by the Office of the University Registrar and published in the Schedule of Classes. Requests for such examinations must be submitted with the proposed course schedule to the department’s dean’s office and then to the Office of the University Registrar.
Make-up examinations
Each day of finals a make-up time has been scheduled to be used in cases where conflicts occur due to the published schedule. Make-up times may also be used on an individual basis, but examinations for the entire class may not be moved without permission, as cited above.
Late afternoon, upper-division courses
These courses, as defined below, are not required to follow the published schedule.
Courses numbered 8000 to 8999 and classes beginning after 4 p.m. (evening classes) may conduct final examinations any time during the examination period that is agreeable to instructor and students.
Arrangements for use of a classroom during the hours 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. during the exam week must be made with the Office of the University Registrar-Registration, 130 Jesse Hall.
Sections that meet one day per week
Any instructor who teaches a course that meets one day a week should check with the Office of the University Registrar-Registration Office, 130 Jesse Hall, to see whether there is another class scheduled at the same time and day in the same room. Should a conflict occur, it must be resolved well before the final examination time.
Note:
Faculty Handbook: Article V, Number 1:
This article is designed to protect students from irregularities in the administration of both multi-section group examinations administered during a semester and final examinations. In general, the registrar is responsible for the guidelines governing the administration of examinations, and he or she is charged with the responsibility of assuring that any conflict that may occur between regularly scheduled examination and a multi-section group examination will not deprive a student of being eligible to take both.
- No teacher shall hold a final examination during any time other than the regular final examination time appointed by the Committee on Schedule of Studies and Examinations. No teacher shall hold an interim examination during any time other than the regular meeting time of the class unless a schedule of such irregular examinations is published prior to the beginning of the semester. Examinations of individual students for particular reasons may be held at the discretion of the teacher.
Refer to Faculty Handbook for more information.
